Sometimes called "Alternative text". This is the text that that will appear if the image for some reason will not appear or if a visually handicapped person uses screen enhancement to get information from the page. If the administrator has set that the web site is going to follow the accessibility guidelines you will be reminded to fill out an image description. By default the alternative Use image description is chosen. If forgetting to fill out a description the following window will appear:

Click OK if deciding not to fill out a description. Then the alternative Don't use image description chosen. If clicking Cancel the field Use image description will become active.

Do not use image description

If the picture is a design element for example an arrow or a decorative image there should not be an image description. The coding will show alt="" which makes the screen browser skip the image.

Get description from metadata for selected image

When uploading an image to the image archive you can add a description on the metadata tab for the image. Read more about this in Menu in the navigator-> image archive. If there is a description on the image with metadata you can choose this alternative otherwise it will be dim.

Tip! Reason for this is to not having to fill out a description for each time using the image. Instead you will add a description in the meta data field when uploading the image.

Use image description

Remember to add text that actually says something about the image. If adding an image with text, the text should always be added to the description. If the image is linked to something this should be stated in the image description.

If the alt-text is longer than 100 characters you will receive a warning:

A tip for increased accessibility! All non-decorative graphical objects should have alternative text.
  • Type short alt-texts with less than 100 characters which describe the image and its function.
  • Avoid explaining that it actually is an image, the browser will do that.
  • If the image contains text, that text is usually suitable as alt-text.
  • Linked images should have an alt-text describing the destination when clicking the link.
OBSERVE! If creating a link from an image and type both image description and link description usually it is only the image description that will be shown. Both these descriptions will appear in the HTML code. It's up to the browser you are using to decide what should be visible. Internet Explorer chooses only to show the image description, but if the user is using an extra tool that converts the HTML to a spoken voice both the descriptions will be read out loud. Therefore it's important to fill out both these descriptions.

Image caption

Here you add a caption if wanting to display a text below the image. The template for the image caption is adjusted in the Properties for the web site -> Appearance -> Template mapping.

Use image description as image caption

Check this box to have the description typed out on the page as an image caption.
