Unique tabs for different kinds of metadata

All types of metadata fields have the tabs General, Search, Advanced, and Security. In addition to these are the different types of one or two tabs that are unique to that particular type of metadata.

Here are the unique tabs for every metadata field.

Kind of metadata

Text

The user himself can type the text value the field should be associated with. The administrator can add a default text if desired.

Allow other arbitrary alternative

By checking this checkbox the administrator gives the users possibility to add their own alternative instead of picking one from the list.

Use search dialog when selecting alternatives

If there is a large number of selectable alternatives, it can be of great help if the user can search for a suitable alternative in a special dialog window instead of picking an alternative from a list.

Default alternative

Here you can choose an alternative to be selected from the list as default.

Multiple selection

This type of metadata field works exactly the same way as Single selection. The only difference is that the user can select more than one alternative at the same time.

System value

Apart from other metadata types where the user himself must type or select a value, this metadata will fetch its value straight from SiteVision.

Screenshot of metadata type System value
Creation dateThe date when the page was created.
Created byThe user who created the page.
Last modified dateThe date when the page was last modified.
Last modified byThe user who last modified the page content.
LanguageThe language used on the page, e.g. "en or "sv".
Published dateThe date that the page was first published.
Published byThe user that published the page.
Last published dateThe date when the page was last published.
Last published byThe last user that published the page.
Page nameThis metadata fields will automatically retrieve the value from the current page name. The value can be inserted as in a text module in the template. That way the editor do not need to fill in the header of the pages created.

You can not use the meta data page name to the title of the article templates. This because you do not name the articles like you do with regular Web pages. The article automatically uses the title and date as the page name.

User as value

When the value inserted is a user (created by, last modified by, published by or last published by) the administrator chooses which kind of user information that is to be inserted. The alternatives are:

  • Full name (e.g. Bill Smith)
  • Username (e.g. bilsmi)
  • Email adress
  • Given name
  • Surname
  • Title
  • Description
  • Telephone

Date format as value

When the value inserted is a date (creation date, last modified date, published date or last published date) it is possible to choose how the date is going to be formatted when displayed.

In the case neither of the two preconfigured formats are suitable it is possible to adjust the formatting of the date e.g through the following combinations:

  • yyyy (year, e.g. 2003)
  • MM (month)
  • dd (day)
  • HH (hours, 0-23)
  • mm (minute)
  • ww (week)

SiteVision uses a so called SimpleDateFormat in order to create the formatting of the date, more information about it (and the possibilities to format date) can be found in the Java documentation at www.java.sun.com.

You can use this type of metadata to select a link. There are no special settings for this kind of metadata. The three general tabs are Common, Search and Advanced.

This metadata definition is used together with the portlet Expanding menu if you want to navigate using metadata.

Related information

This kind of metadata is used to select other pages and documents that are related to the current page. The only settings are Common, Search and Advanced as described below.

When you add a metadata field of Related information, an extra icon is displayed to the right of the name of the metadata field.

Screenshot of metadata type related information

Often they inherit related information for the links to go on for pages. Then you have to click out of the Inherit value before you can click on the icon.

If you click this icon a new window Update related information will open. By clicking the plus icon another window Create new related link will open. Here you can add a link, a text or a user that is related to the current page.

When you have added a metadata of the type directory object, there will be a plus sign and a minus sign to the right of the name of the metadata field.

screenshot of the window select a user

If you would like to edit who is responsible for the page you uncheck the box Inherit value and click on the button to browse or search for different page responsible.

Directory object

This type of metadata is used to reference a catalog object in the directory. This is different from the user object where you can refer to several users or a folder.

Enable sorting of selected values

When this box is checked the window will be larger due to the icons at the right side.

Click the plus sign in order to add a directory object. A new window will open to choose the object. Browse to the desired one.

In the directory object you will receive all the information about the object but you will need to use scripting to get the values you want to utilize. E.g. on the news archive you can select that the news should be displayed for a certain group in the directory. There after you need a script that checks if there are any values set and if the news should be displayed for everyone or just a certain group.

Connection to Text portlet

This type of metadata will fetch its information from a portlet on a page.

Screenshot of connection to text portlet

The metadata field automatically automatically receive the content of the selected portlet as value. Among other things this type of field is used for news functionality, to get title, abstract (introduction) and content from the articles in the archive. Every archive in a website normally has this kind of metadata field.

Connection to Image portlet

This functions the same way as Text portlet, but you insert an image instead of a text. This can be used for news functionality, to get pictures from the articles.

Screenshot of connection to Image portlet
When you have added a metadata of the type User there will be an icon with a red man to the right of the name on the metadata field.
