Panels Metadata

Metadata is information about the page you are on. This can range from information about who created the page and when, to who is responsible for the page and links associated with the page.

Field and value

A metadata consists of two parts, a metadata field and one or more metadata values that are assigned to the field.

Metadata field

A metadata field consists of the metadata name and description. You can set whether the metadata field is to be mandatory, that is, whether a metadata value must be filled in when publishing the page. You can also set whether the metadata field and its value are inherited downwards in the structure and whether it should be indexed as content on searches.

Metadata value

A metadata value is the value associated with the metadata field. This can include text, a link, a user designated in the directory service, or a value taken from SiteVision, a so-called system value. Depending on the settings of the metadata field, the metadata value can be inherited from the overlying part of the structure. The inheritance can be broken if you want to enter a new value for the page you are on. This is done via Properties.

Metadata

Add a metadata

Add metadata

At the bottom of the metadata panel you will find the button to add a new metadata field. In this case, because you are under Website properties, the metadata you add will be available throughout your website. However, it is possible to cancel the inheritance of the metadata value further down the structure, see Inherit metadata fields, and/or control which users have access to the metadata field.

To add a metadata field, follow these steps.

Metadata fields for individual sub-branches of the website are added via Properties.

The website must be published in order for the metadata field to become available in the rest of the website structure. A metadata value must be published in order for it to be available for the visitors.

Change settings for a metadata field

Edit and delete

You can change the settings for a metadata field by clicking the cog icon at the top right of the metadata name. Select the Edit option. Because you are under Website properties, you can only access the metadata fields that are added for the entire website. Metadata fields added for individual pages or sub-branches can be found via Page properties.

It is not possible to change the metadata type on a metadata field afterwards.

 Delete a metadata field

You can delete a metadata field by clicking the cog icon at the top right of the metadata name and selecting the Delete option. A box appears where you confirm that you want to delete the metadata field

When you delete a metadata field, the associated metadata values will also be deleted. You remove the metadata field on the entire website.

Inherit metadata

Inherit

The check box means that the metadata fields and any metadata values are inherited from the overlying part of the structure. You can cancel an inheritance by unticking the box. A new metadata value can then be specified. The metadata value will in turn be inherited to the underlying pages. Inheritance on pages can be cancelled via Properties.

This function requires "Manage metadata field" permission
