Guide Elevate access
Most web editors have, at some point, locked themselves out of the building. Or they’ve experienced a situation where the administrator of a closed group is no longer with the organization. This feature allows you to temporarily expand your permissions and manage things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to.
Add the permission to a role
Decide which role(s) should be able to use Extended Permissions. You manage role permissions from Site Settings > Roles panel. The elevate access is available as a checkbox under the Security heading.
Elevate access are assigned as a right to a role and therefore apply to all users with that role. We recommend assigning the right to the role with the highest level of access, such as cloudadmin or web editor.
Additionally, by linking the permission to a specific user via roles, rather than a shared user, it becomes possible to track in the logs who did what. This provides both better traceability and increased security, while ensuring that multiple people have access when needed.
Turn on Extended Permissions
If your role has this permission, you'll see the "Elevate access" option under the gear icon.

Two-factor authentication
-> Be careful—the dialog box for setting up two-factor authentication only appears once.
The first time you enable Elevated access, you’ll need to set up two-factor authentication.
NOTE: Complete this step immediately; the dialog box appears only once. If you close it before the setup is complete, you’ll need to contact support for assistance.
These steps must be completed by each user who intends to use the Elevated access feature; this is not a global activation.
Authentication app
Using any authentication app (such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator), you can scan the QR code and authenticate yourself.
One-time code
During setup, a number of one-time codes are generated that you can use for authentication; save them, as they can be useful if, for example, you need to enable the feature but don’t have your phone nearby. Keep in mind that these are one-time codes that are consumed once used.

Logout
When you have Elevated access, a list appears at the top of the edit mode. There, you can exit Elevated access mode when you are finished. If you are inactive for more than 15 minutes, you will be automatically logged out of Elevated access.

What you can and cannot do
- With Elevated access, you can manage locked pages and closed groups that you would otherwise not have access to.
- You can also access structures that you normally do not have permission to view under Pages, Image Archives, File Archives, and Templates.
- Extend Permissions can be used for web users and for users who log in via the organization’s single sign-on (SAML).
- The permission applies to the entire website and cannot be restricted to specific sections. It is intended for performing specific actions, not for ongoing website administration.
- For security reasons, you cannot access import/export, indexes, roles, or directory services in extended mode.
This function requires that you have the "Use elevated access" permission.
