Main menu

The Main Menu module allows you to easily add a top menu to your website. You can combine this menu with a submenu.

Place the module in the template to make it accessible on all pages of the website.

If all menu items do not fit, a drop-down menu is created with the menu items that do not fit.

Settings

You can only set the starting point in this module. And in the case of the main menu, the starting point is usually the Top level.

Starting point

Top level

Select this if you want the menu to always start from the top level.

Current page

Current page means that the menu will start on the page the visitor is on.

Sub tree

Select this if you want the menu to always start from the selected sub-branch.

From metadata

Using the link metadata type, you can point out where in the structure the menu should start. This allows you to use the same menu module to display different content in the menu depending on where you are in the structure.

If you choose this option, you can specify which metadata to use as a starting point.

From closest group page or metadata

Select this if you want the menu to always start from the sub-branch that is selected.

Custom starting point

Selecting Custom starting point allows you to specify a specific page in the structure where the menu should start.

If you choose this option, you can specify which metadata to use as a starting point.

The menu will always show the same content, no matter where in the structure you are. A fixed starting point can be useful for example for a top menu where the content to be displayed should always be the same.

Other tips about the module Main menu

Accessibility

The name of the module is used as an aria label which is used, for example, by screen readers to identify the content. It is advisable to name the module in a way that assistive technologies understand what the module displays. There should not be multiple menu modules with the same name on the page.

Use Theme to adjust color

Using Theme, you can control the font and background color of your main menu. The settings are made via properties on the layout where you have the main menu. Some examples are:

  • If you do not make any settings, the font color and background color will be retrieved from Basic in the theme.
  • If you select “Select theme” on the layout where you have the main menu, the font color and section background will be retrieved from Basic in the theme.
  • If you select “Select colors for layout” on the layout where you have the main menu, the following options will appear:
    • Basic colors (font color and section background)
    • Default block colors
    • Primary block colors
    • Secondary block colors

The font size is taken from the Basic settings of the theme. You can also add your own CSS to the module if you want a different size, for example font-size:1.2em;
