Public Comments

With the Public Comments module, visitors can easily comment and interact on the website. For example, you can post text and emojis and easily reply to other comments.

Settings Public Comments

Settings

Use a joint comment field for all language versions

Select this setting if you want all language versions of the page to share the same comment section.

When this setting is enabled, all comments are linked to the page’s original language. This means that comments posted on one language version will appear on all language versions of the page. When comments are retrieved or posted, the page in the original language is used as the source.

Example: If a comment is published on the English version of the page, it will also appear on the Swedish, German, and other language versions.

If this setting is not enabled, each language version has its own comment field. Comments published on one language version will then only appear on that specific language version, even if the pages are translations of the same content.

Moderated mode: administrator must approve each comment

All comments must first be approved by the administrator(s) before they are published on the page.

Show toolbar for text formatting

Here you can choose whether to display the toolbar for text formatting for those writing comments.

The top row contains icons for:

  • B - Bold text
  • I - Italic text
  • S - Strikethrough text
  • Numbered list
  • Bulleted list
  • Code
  • Code block

The bottom row contains icons for:

  • Emoji picker
  • Hide formatting

Allow links in comments

Use this setting to control whether web addresses in comments are clickable or displayed as plain text.

When this setting is checked, web addresses (URLs) in comments will be automatically converted into clickable links that visitors can follow.

Please note that only standard links are supported. For security reasons, links are not converted into so-called "rich links" or previews. Since the module can be used on external websites, there is an increased risk that links may lead to harmful or inappropriate content.

If this setting is not checked, web addresses will appear as plain text and will not be clickable for visitors.

Limit number of days you can comment

If you want comments on the page to be allowed for only a certain number of days, set it here. The date the page was created counts as the first day.

If the box is checked, you cannot unlock the page for new comments directly in the interface; instead, you must do so by unchecking the box in the settings.

Select a metadata for the author of the page

You can use metadata to designate the page’s author. The page will then display “author” next to the name when comments are posted. The page’s author will also receive notifications when a new comment is posted on the page.

Sorting

Here you can choose how to sort the comments:

  • Newest to oldest
  • Oldest to newest

Accessibility

Base heading level

To ensure you have the correct heading levels in the module, we’ve added an h2 as the default heading level. Here, you can change this to suit your design and ensure the correct heading level. You can change it to anything from h1 to h6 to match the correct heading level in the activity feed.

Administrators

Administrators must have write permissions

Select administrators

Here you add the people who will be able to manage the comments. That is, moderate, delete, hide, and edit comments. Click the Add link to add an administrator. Remove an administrator by selecting that person in the list and clicking the X on the right.

Administrators must have an email address associated with their account so that users can “report a comment.” If administrators do not have an email address, the option to report a comment is hidden.

Only administrators receive an email if a comment is reported; recipients do NOT.

Select a metadata for the administrator

You can also select a metadata field to designate an administrator (must point to the user's ID and be listed on the page)

Appearance

Show profile images in comments

If you have enabled Social Collaboration on the site, profile pictures can be displayed alongside comments.

Recipients

Select recipients

Here you can add recipients by clicking Add.

Recipients receive an email when a comment is published on a website. Recipients can also receive an email when a comment changes from hidden to visible. This is determined by the administrator via a checkbox in the dialog box when the decision is made.

To use public comments anonymously, the website must be public, and you must follow these steps:

  1. Create a user in your directory service or as a web user that you can use as a service user for anonymous comments.
  2. Create a service user on the website and designate the user you created in step 1.
  3. Set up a “privileged user.” To do this, go to the Add-ons view → Public Comments → Properties → Permissions → Enable Privileged Mode → Select the service user you created in step 2.

The word “Guest” will appear next to comments written by users who are not logged in.
